About the Collection
This site was created to display images and data about Dr. Sophie White’s personal historical clothing collection. Dr. White teaches in the American Studies department at the University of Notre Dame where she focuses on Gender, Race and Slavery, French Colonial America, and most importantly to this project, Material Culture. Despite her interests broadening throughout her career, Dr. White has always had a passion for historical clothing; having collected and worn most of the items in her collection in her daily life–especially during her time at the University of Edinburgh. As an example of her collection, this site contains a mix of clothing items, jewelry, shoes, and hats, all ranging in production from the 1860s to 1980s. There are also images of Dr. White wearing certain items in the late 1980s.
Dr. White’s interest in material culture combined with her love of historical dress makes her unique collection a perfect aid in understanding the history of dress. Because this collection is somewhat personal to myself and my family, the target audience is Sophie White herself. Secondary audiences and potential users include those interested in the history of clothing/dress, those studying material culture, general vintage and historical clothing lovers.

This digital collection is built with CollectionBuilder, an open source framework for creating digital collection and exhibit websites that is developed by faculty librarians at the University of Idaho Library following the Lib-Static methodology.
The site started from the CollectionBuilder-GH template which utilizes the static website generator Jekyll and GitHub Pages to build and host digital collections and exhibits.
